The Truth About Travel Credit Cards vs. Debit Cards

I recently came across a post and response on Threads about travel credit cards that completely stopped me in my tracks.

This Threads post says - A debit card can do everything a credit card can do, except put you in debt. The person responding says - My credit card got me 37 thousand dollars in free travel last year. What did your debit card do>?

As someone whoโ€™s been using travel credit cards for years, Iโ€™ve said this a hundred times, and Iโ€™ll keep saying it: when used responsibly, credit cards can be one of the most powerful tools for travel. That $37,000 figure? I know it seems ridiculous, but itโ€™s totally possible. My travel credit cards have covered flights, hotels, rental cars, and airport lounge access, experiences I wouldn’t have afforded otherwise.

Even bestselling author Ramit Sethi, in I Will Teach You to Be Rich – a book all about getting out of debt and building wealth (which you should totally read by the way) – starts his very first chapter on why credit cards are essential. That says a lot.

So, if youโ€™re still on the fence, let me break it down.

Why Debit Cards Just Donโ€™t Stack Up to Travel Credit Cards

Using a debit card might feel like the โ€œsafeโ€ or โ€œresponsibleโ€ choice. After all, thereโ€™s no risk of going into debt, right? But in todayโ€™s world, relying only on a debit card means missing out big time.

Hereโ€™s why:

  • Minimal to no rewards. Most debit cards donโ€™t offer meaningful perks. No points. No cashback. No free flights or hotel stays.
  • No help building your credit. Debit cards donโ€™t affect your credit score. Building credit is extremely important, even if youโ€™re not planning a big purchase right now.
  • Weaker fraud protection. If someone gets your debit card info, thatโ€™s money straight out of your bank account. With a credit card, youโ€™re more protected.
  • No travel perks. You wonโ€™t get benefits like rental car insurance, trip delay coverage, or lounge access with your bank card.

Why Travel Credit Cards Are Total Game-Changers

Used wisely, travel credit cards can be a tool, not a trap.

What makes them insanely powerful:

  • Points and miles with outsized value. When you transfer points to airline and hotel partners, you can get way more than the typical 1โ€“2 cents per point. I recently went on a $3,000+ luxury resort vacation for less than $300 out of pocket by leveraging travel credit cards.
  • Built-in travel protections. Most premium travel credit cards include things like trip cancellation insurance, baggage delay coverage, and even primary rental car insurance. These have saved me more than once.
  • Top-tier fraud protection. Disputing a fraudulent charge takes one click, and youโ€™re not losing cash from your checking account.
  • Travel perks. Think free checked bags, priority boarding, TSA PreCheck or Global Entry credit, and even airport lounge access. These little things make travel so much smoother. Using airport lounges for the free food has saved me hundreds over the last several years. Bye bye mediocre $25 airport sandwiches.

The Key: Use Your Credit Card LIKE a Debit Card

None of this works if youโ€™re carrying a balance month to month. Thatโ€™s where people get tripped up. These strategies are not for you if you carry credit card debt. Paying that off should be your absolute first priority. BUT I do hope you can do that quickly so you can get in on the travel hacking game!

My secret? A simple routine I call Finance Day. Every other Sunday morning after payday, I sit down with my coffee, check my transactions, pay off any balances, and track my points. It takes less than an hour. No stress. No surprises. Just peace of mind, and a growing travel fund.

You might think Iโ€™m weird, but I honestly love Finance Day, and itโ€™s all thanks to the system Iโ€™ve built for myself.ย

Everyday Spending = Dream Travel

Hereโ€™s the truth: your debit card isnโ€™t giving you the most bang for your buck. Every dollar you spend could be earning you free travel if youโ€™re using the right travel credit card.

That $6 coffee?
That grocery run?
That dinner with friends?

All of it can turn into flights, hotel stays, and even a bucket list luxury vacation.
